<itunes:summary>This week I bring you another excellent mobile app for you for code management during cardiac arrest. In this case it's from the experts at the American Heart Association. They've taken all of the things they've been recommending about code management and ACLS guidelines, gathered them together and put them in a very useful app that may change the way you manage your cardiac arrest patients.
CPR Timer and Code Management Tool
(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Full_code_pro_screenshot-201x300.png)It's basically a specialized stopwatch with tracking of all of the events of a cardiac arrest resuscitation attempt. You start the timer when you arrive and begin CPR. Hit the Shock button when you defibrillate, the Epi button when you give epinephrine, and so on. There are other entry options for return of spontaneous circulation, rhythm checks, medications other than epinephrine and for charting other events.

After you complete the code, the timer can be synced to the clock on your heart monitor, asks for the team leader name and recorder's name. Then you can email the Code log to yourself or others. During the code, at any time you stop CPR for more then ten seconds, it will alert you with a color change in the timer next to the Resume CPR button.
Pros Outweigh Cons for App
The only things I'd like to see change is an option to have a Compression Metronome tick at 100 beats per minute, an audible alarm when CPR is stopped for longer than 10 seconds and an Android version of the app for those smartphone and tablet devices. Other than those items, this is the perfect tool for the recorder or team leader on the scene at a cardiac arrest and the best part is it's available free on the app store for iPhone and iPad now (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=F8fXfrcbE/o&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=https%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Ffull-code-pro%252Fid589451064%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30).

I think this essential tool should be loaded on all smart phones right away for use when the need arises.

<itunes:subtitle>Our sponsor Aladtec and EMSManager.net got ahold of me and told me something surprising. They have numerous customers using their unique, web-based EMS scheduling and management service - Except in the State of Mississippi! What's up with that?</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/paramedic-girl-blonde-200x300.jpg)This week I bring you a special message if you are or know someone who is an EMS professional in Mississippi. Our sponsor Aladtec and EMSManager.net (http://emsmanager.net) got ahold of me and told me something surprising. They have numerous customers using their unique, web-based EMS scheduling and management service - Except in the State of Mississippi! What's up with that?
1/2 Off First Year!
They told me that I have an opportunity to get in on a special offer for 50% off the cost of the system for the first year. This goes to the first EMS system that signs up from the State of Mississippi. I can't believe there are no current subscribers there but that means there's a tremendous opportunity for you or your managers to get the absolute best scheduling tool that will save them hours of work each and every week with their intuitive EMS scheduling and management app. You can access it from anywhere on the web via a secure interface including from your favorite mobile devices.

Don't take my word for it. Check out the free demo you can try out at EMSManager.net (http://emsmanager.net). You won't be sorry you took the time to do it. Don't forget to tell them you heard about it here on MedicCast TV. I look forward to hearing that one of my audience members cashed in on this special offer for a Mississippi EMS system to get 1/2 off the first year using EMS Manager for their scheduling needs.

I’m Jamie Davis, the Podmedic. That’s this week's weekly commentary here at the MedicCast. Stay tuned here at MedicCast.tv for all of the weekly commentary segments as well as the regular MedicCast episode studio video, don't forget to thank our generous sponsors and please remember, people, Scene Safety, BSI.

<itunes:summary>(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/MedStar_MHC_Logo-300x193.png)MedSTAR EMS changed its name recently to MedSTAR Mobile Healthcare (http://www.medstar911.org). This signifies a fundamental shift in how healthcare is provided on MedSTAR ambulances. At a time when many systems are trying to reinvent themselves and fit into the new reformed system of healthcare in the United States, MedSTAR is paving the way with their move to become a true mobile health care system and not just a transport service. MedicCast host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic is joined by Matt Zavadsky, Director of Public Affairs at MedSTAR Mobile Healthcare to talk about how other systems can make the improvements and innovations that MedSTAR has.

<itunes:summary>MedicCast host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic is joined by Chris Montera, host of the EMS Garage (http://emsgarage.com), and Tom Bouthillet, host of the EMS 12-Lead podcast (http://ems12lead.com) to continue the time-honored tradition of sharing innovative products with the ProMed Network audience. Jamie's product pick for EMS Today 2013 is the clinical version of the iSpO2 mobile pulse oximeter from pulse oximetry leaders Masimo.

This is the clinical version of the acclaimed consumer product of the same name that connects to the user's smartphone and makes that mobile platform a pulse oximetry device. See Jamie's interview from this year's consumer electronic show (CES 2013) (http://htweekly.com/2013/01/masimo-ispo2-new-consumer-health-tech/) on the Health Tech Weekly podcast for that device.

Steve Heightman from Masimo sits down and shows off the soon to be released clinical version of the device which will be FDA approved soon for use by EMS and other health care professionals. Check out the iSpO2 on it's website (http://ispo2.com).

A special thank you to Physio-Control, Inc., Pennwell and EMS Today for allowing the ProMed Network team to cover this event.

While at EMS Today 2013 in the ProMed Network Podcast Studio, sponsored by Physio-Control, EMS Garage Host Chris Montera sat down with Scott Streicher from SafetyPad.com to talk about the SafetyPad ePCR system. A special thank you to EMS Today, JEMS.com, and Pennwell for having us in to cover this event and interview our special guests.

SafetyPAD is a comprehensive, flexible, easy-to-use electronic Patient Care Reporting (ePCR) system that allows agencies to collect, utilize and share incident and patient EMS data. SafetyPAD allows first responders and paramedics to accurately generate pre-hospital patient care documentation in the field in real-time.

It provides EMS agencies with everything they need to enhance the operation of the entire EMS enterprise via two mature and interconnected platforms:SafetyPAD Mobile (http://safetypad.com/mobile/) (for in-field data collection) and SafetyPAD Enterprise (http://safetypad.com/enterprise/) (a web-based EMS information management system).

Rick Russotti from the Mitigation Journal (http://mitigationjournal.org) joins Jamie Davis from the MedicCast to look at some of the response resources available from some of the vendors on the show floor at the Public Health Preparedness Summit (http://phprep.org). In the background in this video segment from the exhibit hall is just one of the large modular tent support structures that can house medical and other response facilities on location following a disaster.

Rick points out that these structures make it possible to provide a more normal standard of care for individuals following a disaster. This is a better level of care than has been expected by public health officials in the past where they are only expecting to be able to provide a "sufficiency of care."

<itunes:summary>Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and Rick Russotti from the Mitigation Journal (http://mitigationjournal.org) kick off the first full day at the Public Health Preparedness Summit (http://phprep.org) with a look at the varied attendees at this conference. An international group of public health officials are in attendance from countries like China and South Korea, as well as others.
Preparedness is Universal
Rick points out that preparedness issues for public health professionals are somewhat universal. No matter what disaster you are preparing for, the challenges of providing for the population in its aftermath are the same. Whether it's a tsunami, earthquake, hurricane or tornado the victims and survivors have the same daily needs for their continued health as the recovery proceeds.

<itunes:summary>Good day and welcome to this episode of the MedicCast TV weekly commentary at MedicCast.tv. I’m your host, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and this week I have another new episode for you.
EMS 2020 Campaign

This week I'd like to talk about an initiative that EMSWorld.com is promoting called EMS 2020. According to their introduction of this program they'll be unfolding over the coming months, EMS 2020 with be "a multimedia guidebook to what EMS will look like in the near future and how we can ensure the safety and well-being of our stakeholders as we get there."

Ok, I'm in!

The fact of the matter is that we need to have more industry wide planning and, honestly, soul searching, in order to better provide care for our patients during the changes to health care and our industry over the coming years. You might think that this is a long way off but 2020 will be here before you know it. It's only seven years away and that time will fly by.
Patient and EMS Safety to the Forefront
How many EMS providers will die needlessly because we don't continue to push for better safety procedures and practices? How many of our patients will be injured or die because we don't stand up and advocate for better public health programs to teach bystander CPR to a wider community? So I say "Kudos" to the editorial staff at EMSWorld.com as they unfold the various segments of this program on their site.

You can check out the first two months of articles and special podcasts at EMSWorld.com/2020 (http://EMSWorld.com/2020) or follow the links in the show notes for this episode. I urge you to own a part of EMS 2020 in your EMS practice. Work to be safer in your practice and take up the charge among your colleagues for this initiative. If you don't champion this program, who will?

I’m Jamie Davis, the Podmedic. That's this week's MedicCast TV episode of the month. Stay tuned here at MedicCast.tv for all of the weekly commentary segments as well as the regular MedicCast episode studio video, don't forget to thank our generous sponsors and please remember, people, Scene Safety, BSI.

<itunes:summary>Good day and welcome to this episode of the MedicCast TV weekly commentary. I’m your host, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and this week I have another special app review episode for you.
AED and CPR Apps for iOS
(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/EMT-paramedic-pediatric-ventilation-sm-300x208.jpg)As a CPR instructor, I'm always looking for tools to use in my classes for both the community and for healthcare professionals. This week I want to show you an iPad app that provides you a CPR AED Trainer that has many features instructors like me love to see. The AED Trainer from Ivor Medical is not just an AED training app, it is part of a complete instructional system. But more on that later.

When you start up the app, you see an AED closed and ready to deploy. Touch the screen and the AED lid opens revealing the pads and AED controls. Students push the on button and the AED begins to speak the instructions to the user just like a real AED beginning with orders to call for help and then to attach pads to the patient's chest.
Very Realistic Training Experience
Now here comes the cool part. You touch the pads inside the lid and a screen pops in that allows you to drag the pads to a "virtual patient" and place them appropriately. Once they are properly placed, the AED instructs the student to "not touch the patient" while it analyzes heart rhythm.

The trainer is up to date with the 2010 guidelines and is completely programable via the settings button in the upper lefthand corner of the screen. Instructors can program the app to run scenarios where the rhythm is shockable or not shockable through up to 8 cycles of CPR. They can also let the trainer select a random series of shocks or no shocks. The Info button in the upper right corner provides full instructions and also a series of videos for on AED use and CPR.
Companion iPhone AED Remote Control App
(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/ManikinAEDtrainer-e1360111258645-300x211.png)I said earlier that this program is part of an instructional system. What I meant by that is while you can use the AED Trainer as a stand-alone app, there is also a companion iPhone app that allows an instructor to control the AED Trainer remotely from their phone. This gives the instructor that much more control over the educational experience, allowing customization of a scenario on the fly.

Overall this app and it's companion iPhone remote app are the total solution for AED education in CPR classes, recertification and ongoing drills and training.

The AED Trainer by Ivor Medical (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=F8fXfrcbE/o&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=https%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Faed-trainer%252Fid502388483%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30) is currently priced at $4.99. The companion iPhone AED Remote app is priced at $2.99.

I’m Jamie Davis, the Podmedic. That’s the app review for this month. Stay tuned here at MedicCast.tv (http://mediccast.tv) for all of the weekly commentary segments as well as the regular MedicCast episode studio video and please remember, Scene Safety, BSI.

Anne found the ELSA from RTT Mobile Interpretation. It's a hand held device that can also be worn on a lanyard around the neck and it connect via cellular connection to a live language interpreter who speaks directly with your patient. Your questions and instructions are interpreted and the patient's responses are interpreted back.

The limited english proficient (LEP) population and the need for urgent interpretation in diverse environments continue to increase. While the opportunities for RTT to serve are many, we are delivering world class interpretation expertise to law enforcement, healthcare, financial services and government agencies.

<itunes:summary>(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/tactical-patrol-xf-pack-300x280.png)For the tactical EMS professional, having what you need close at hand without cluttering up the pack with needless tools is important. In this product pick from EMS World Expo 2012 in New Orleans last month, our good friend Patrick Lickiss joins the panel to show his pick for the expo.

The Patrol XF pack from Conterra has a lot of the features you might need in a tactical EMS pack so you have just what you need when you need it in tactical emergency medical services operations.

From the Conterra site (http://www.conterra-inc.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=257):
We took our time proven Patrol III and added features for use by security and military forces. The XF sports a quick release buckle system for attaching a roll up tactical stretcher (sold separately, please see Patrol XF Roll Up Stretcher). In addition to all the outside pockets and internal organization of the P-III, the XF has the ability to attach two fold out IDM pockets (sold separately).
Check out all of our product picks from the finale episode at MedicCast.tv.

Back injuries related to difficult lifting of heavy patients is a huge problem for EMTs and paramedics in emergency medical services but perhaps not anymore. In another product innovator segment from EMS World Expo 2012 in New Orleans, our finale episode team brings Scott Kier (MedicSBK.com) to the table with his pick.

From the EZ-LIFT Rescue Systems website (http://www.ezliftrescue.com/):
With a breakthrough patented design, the EZ LIFT Rescue Systems™ reinvents the traditional backboard to make lifting safer and reduce on-the-job back injuries. This unique design uses extendable handles to allow firefighters and EMS personnel to lift from a safe position near, at, or above the knees – as opposed to the conventional lifting position from the floor to the gurney.
(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/ezlift_logo-final2.png)The EZ-LIFT backboard has extending lift handles that offer the provider in the field a way to increase the leverage they use while lifting from a much safer position. Check out the video segment from our team at Expo and thanks to Dave Robinson, President of EZ-LIFT Rescue Systems for joining us on our finale segment at Expo.

<itunes:summary>(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/SET_black2-300x170.jpg)More Product Innovator Picks from MedicCast TV and the ProMed Network podcaster team at EMS World Expo 2012 in New Orleans earlier this month. In this pick, First Few Moments host Kyle David Bates joins Chris Montera from the EMS Garage and MedicCast TV host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic. Kyle brings us the RHYNO Windshield Cutter from WeCutTheGlass.com (http://WeCutTheGlass.com).

The RHYNO Windshield Cutter is a unique extrication tool used to rapidly remove vehicle glass to gain access to injured occupants.

Windshield, passenger and rear windows can be removed in about 45 seconds for quick access to patients or for further rescue operations. Laminated glass is a type of safety glass which utilizes two or more regular or specially strengthened glass sheets bonded together with a special plastic interlayer to form a clear, see-through barrier with enhanced impact and shatter resistance.

The three also looked forward to EMS World Expo 2013 (http://EMSWorldExpo.com), back in Las Vegas, Nevada. With new and exciting changes each year at the expo, Scott promised some interesting updates to the conference to support both attendees and vendors in the exhibit hall. Jamie and Chris both talked about the fifth anniversary of their coverage of EMS World Expo from the podcast studio coming up next year.

<itunes:summary>(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/spraybottle250-170x300.jpg)During the Finale episode at EMS World Expo, each of the podcast hosts from the ProMed Network Podcast Studio gets to pick a product innovator pick from the hundreds of products we see in the exhibit hall. This episode kicks off that list with Chris Montera's product pick. Chris is the host of the EMS Garage podcast (http://EMSGarage.com).

Chris picked the GEN-X-3 disinfectant, cleaner and purifier spray by Nature Tech Solutions (http://GEN-X-3.com). The GEN-X-3TMsystem consists of a compact docking station and hand-held applicator that together create a powerful, chemical-free sanitizing/disinfecting solution that is 80-200 times more powerful than chlorine, yet safe enough to drink.

Using the convenient and economical GEN-X-3TM system, consumers can now kill infection-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores without the expense and health hazards associated with chemically based cleaning products.

This episode recorded in the Physio-Control (http://physio-control.com) sponsored Podcast Studio at EMS World Expo 2012 in New Orleans.

It is so very important to not just do high quality compressions but to continue with those compressions as long as possible with as few interruptions and as much consistency as possible.

<itunes:summary>(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Aladtec-ems-sponsor-sheet1-300x235.jpg)EMS Leadership Podcast host Chris Cebollero is joined by Dare County, NC EMS Deputy Director Stephen Taylor to talk about some of the most time consuming tasks emergency medical services managers deal with. Chris and Steve met up at EMS World Expo 2012 in New Orleans this past month.

Chris and Steve are both users of EMS Manager for their EMS programs. They discuss the time savings and the ways EMS Manager from Aladtec helps them avoid the headaches of multiple scheduling calendars and managing the diverse needs of their crews. Steve said that his system went from 20 man hours managing the schedule to just four hours per scheduling period. That's a significant savings in time for a supervisor to use doing other things.

The EMS Voluntary Event Notification Tool (E.V.E.N.T.) is a tool designed to improve the safety, quality and consistent delivery of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). It collects data submitted anonymously by EMS practitioners.

E.V.E.N.T. is a program of the Center for Leadership, Innovation, and Research in EMS (CLIR) with sponsorship provided by the North Central EMS Institute (NCEMSI), the National EMS Management Association (NEMSMA), the Emergency Medical Services Chiefs of Canada (EMSCC), the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and the National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO).

EMS providers like EMTs and paramedics can report an event by going to EMSEventReport.com (http://emseventreport.com) and select the type of event they would like to report. All reporting is anonymous. The information is used to improve the safety of EMS systems in the U.S. and around world. Overall, the E.V.E.N.T. site with data collected hopes to develop a culture of safety across emergency medical services.

We liked them so much, we invited them to become an episode sponsor at EMS World Expo in New Orleans.

Inventor Dennis DeCiancio came on the beginning of the EMS 12-Lead podcast to show the panel how this vital safety tool works. Host Tom Bouthillet and Guest Ted Setla were suitably impressed and Tom pointed out the applications that exist outside of the traditional medical arena such as home care use for patients with regular injection routines.

Check out a free demo of the services at www.EMSManager.net (http://www.EMSManager.net). Greg Friese, host of the EMS Educast, is joined by EMS Manager user Stephen Taylor. Stephen is the Deputy Director of EMS for Dare County, NC and chats with Greg about this amazing time and money saving tool.

Stephen starts by talking about how his system used to schedule crews and staff for their 'EMS system before implementing EMS Manager. They were spending 20 or more man hours each week to do the job. After switching to EMS Manager, the time spent dropped to less than 4 hours. Crew and staff management has never been this easy, he says.

Being able to get your hands on some of the new and innovative tools we need to do our jobs is just one of the many reasons to attend conferences like EMS World Expo. In addition to the tools of EMS, the conference exhibit hall features ambulances of all shapes and sizes, clothing, gear and more.

If you can't make it to EMS World Expo (http://emsworldexpo.com) this year, start making plans for next year's EMS World Expo 2013 in Las Vegas, NV.

<itunes:summary>Good day and welcome to this episode of the MedicCast TV weekly commentary. I’m your host, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and this week I have another special app review episode for you.

(http://www.mediccast.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/app-store-icon-300x300.jpg)Most of you know your favorite EMS podcasters from the ProMed Network will be attending EMS World Expo later this month and recording live shows from our Podcast Studio. Hopefully we'll see many of you there. I've talked in the past about the things you should have with you at the conference, business cards, a camera, a pen are all important tools to have with you. But now, EMS World Expo added another indispensable item to the list. The EMS World Expo App!
Specialized Conference App
EMS World developed it just for the conference. It offers many time management, navigation and calendar organization features as well as a full schedule of events, speakers and vendors. It's become my most important tool for the upcoming expo.

When you open the app, it updates with the latest event information. It then leads you to a very simple display that has icons for everything you might need. You can create a calendar of saved events, conference sessions and even add appointments of your own so you have the whole conference schedule in one place. When you are looking at the event or speaker listing, clicking on an event adds it to your calendar automatically. I have all my podcast recording times added so I can schedule meetings and still get the MedicCast recorded each day.
Streamline Your Conference Experience
Under Exhibitors is a listing of all the exhibitors and their location. There's also a floor map of the conference hall which shows vendors you've starred or marked so you can get to them. Can't figure out where you are on the map? There's a locate me function where you type in a few letters of a booth near you and the map zooms to show you where you are in the exhibit hall. The map also allows you to select vendors based on category and then all the vendors in that category are highlighted on the map. That's really handy!

There's a lot more to this app including speaker listings, event schedule and even a map of local attractions. One of the best parts of the app from my standpoint is the twitter stream. You can follow the twitter stream live from the app and check out what's hot and what's not while you're on the go all week long. The EMS World Expo 2012 app is Free and I would say it's a must have for the conference at the end of this month. It will change the way you approach the show. When you get the app, make sure you find the Podcast Studio on the map and drop by and see us!

I’m Jamie Davis, the Podmedic. That’s the app review for this month. Stay tuned here at MedicCast.tv for all of the weekly commentary segments and from EMS World Expo, all of our coverage and interviews recorded from the show floor. Hope to see you there and please remember, Scene Safety, BSI.

<itunes:summary>Stephanie Haley-Andrews, Co-Director, EMS Outreach and Education Program, Children’s Hospital Colorado, has transformed the role of the hospital-based EMS liaison. She has taken a historically reactive role (patient follow up, meeting EMS crews upon ED arrival, QA/QI) and turned it into a proactive platform to reach out/serve EMS in the western region and improve the care they provide to their pediatric patients.

Stephanie was recognized as an EMS 10 Innovator in 2012 by program sponsors JEMS.com and Physio-Control for this project. Find more videos like this here at MedicCast.tv (http://mediccast.tv).</itunes:summary>
